San Diego County : Ramona
It was once common to encounter creeks, ponds and small waterfalls tucked deep in valleys throughout East County San Diego. They often supported the growth of shady oak groves rising tall above diverse shrubs and grasses. Following decades of drought coupled with rising temperatures however many of these water sources dried up becoming seasonal at best. A large number of oaks died as well -- their bald, withering frames now a typical feature of the landscape.
So it was with surprise that I found this pond finally filled at the Ramona Grasslands Preserve on the heels of a very active rain season. A storm had just passed as I walked around its shore -- remaining clouds reflected well in still water.
My first taste of photography was (seemingly ages ago) while taking an intro to photography course. There we learned the basics of shooting, darkroom development, and print with film. In following years I carried my Cannon AE-1 all over the world taking pictures for fun and memories. Upon an introduction to DSLRs, my devotion to photography exploded given the new possibilities I found for manipulating and personalizing images. What feeds this passion is the emotive capacity of art – its ability to evoke strong reactions from viewers. I could spend hours sifting through and losing myself in the work of Eugene Atget or Michael Kenna. I absolutely love their long exposures, how textured skies and oceans soften into a quiet haze in which...

Another beautiful shot. I hear you about the drought. I was quite worried about the health of my 3 redwoods on the property. I used saved gray water to water my chrysanthemums the last few years. We live near Crystal Spring, seeing the way level going down was heart wrenching. And seeing businesses and some homes leaving the sprinklers on and on drove me nuts.
William Dunigan replied:
Thanks Alinna! And sorry to hear about your redwoods, but glad to hear you have a grey water system, seems like something that should exist statewide. I remember Crystal Spring, hate to imagine it being so low; here I think many people are beginning to accept the fact that east county summers could become a high desert environment. I'm planting California Barrels now!
